VFR OVER THE TOP RATING - AEROPLANE

Flying VFR Over-the-Top means flying with visual reference to a layer of cloud instead of the earth's surface. This type of flying requires advanced training in instrument flying and radio navigation skills as well as advanced training in interpretation and application of weather reports and forecasts.


VFR OTT RATING AGE REQUIREMENTS

You must be a minimum of 17 years of age and hold a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) to be issued a VFR Over-The-Top rating

VFR OTT MEDICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT

Prior to beginning your flight training for the VFR Over-The-Top rating, you must have a valid Category 1 or 3 aviation medical certificate from a Transport Canada-approved Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME). If you are not planning to fly professionally as a Commercial pilot, a Category 3 medical is all that you need. Below is a list of approved list of medical examiners in the London, Ontario area:

VFR OTT EXAM KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

No written exam in required for the VFR Over-The-Top rating

VFR OTT FLIGHT EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Complete a minimum of 15 hours dual instrument time of which a maximum of 5 hours may be instrument ground time. Any previous instrument training (including PPL instrument or night rating training) counts toward the 15 hour instrument training requirement

VFR OTT FLIGHT TEST SKILL REQUIREMENT

No flight test is required for the night rating

VFR OTT PRIVILEGES

A VFR Over-The-Top rating allows you to fly single-engine, single pilot non-high-performance aircraft above cloud during the enroute portion of the flight (other weather conditions apply), in Visual Flight Rules (VFR) weather conditions. You may not fly for hire or reward.

VFR OTT TRAINING DURATION

3.5 weeks if flying full time (minimum 3 sessions per week)

2.5 months if flying part time (minimum 1 session per week)
